A room decor prompt tells an AI to restyle only the decorative layer of a room from your photo: textiles, wall art, mirrors, plants, lamps and the objects on your shelves. The furniture, walls, windows, floor and camera angle stay exactly as they are. The difference between one that works and one that quietly redesigns your room is two clauses: a keep clause that lists what must not change, and a home for every new item. Below are 40 copy and paste room decoration prompts sorted by decor layer, by room and by season, written the way that held up when we tested them.

I run MeltFlex, an AI interior design tool where redecorating a photographed room is the core job. On October 30, 2026 I ran five decor prompts on two rooms from our creations gallery, each with and without a keep clause, through Nano Banana 2.1, Google’s image model and the one MeltFlex renders on. That is 20 edits plus three reruns. The test images are not in this article; every picture here is a finished render from the gallery, and the results are written up in the test section.

Almost everything that makes this room is decor: the gallery wall, the cushions, the throws and the shelf. From our creations gallery.
“Telling the model to keep the furniture is not enough. It also has to know where the new things go. Ask for a table lamp in a room with no table and it will build you a table.”

FreeUpload photo · freeA room decor prompt is an image edit request that keeps your room and changes what you could swap in a weekend. It sits at the light end of three kinds of AI room prompt, and picking the right one decides how much of your real room survives:
| Prompt type | What changes | What stays | Real-life cost to carry out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decor (this guide) | Cushions, throws, curtains, rugs, art, mirrors, plants, lamps, styling | Layout, walls, windows, floor, all furniture, camera | Lowest: no tools, no contractor |
| Makeover | Some or all furniture, finishes, color | Layout, walls, windows | Medium |
| Redesign | Style, furniture, materials, often the layout | Usually only the room’s shape | Highest |
Start with decor. If a decor pass fixes the room, you never needed the makeover. If it does not, you have learned that the problem is the furniture or the layout, which is a different prompt and a different budget.
Every prompt in this guide is the same five-part sentence with different nouns. The order matters: the keep clause goes before the change, because the model reads the limits before it starts adding.
| Part | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The room | Anchors the edit to your photo | “Redecorate this living room.” |
| 2. Keep clause | Locks the structure and the furniture | “Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring, the wall-mounted TV and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle. Do not add any furniture.” |
| 3. One decor layer | Says what may change | “Change only the cushions and throw on the existing sofa.” |
| 4. Palette or material | Makes the result specific | “Rust, oat and olive, washed linen and chunky wool.” |
| 5. A home for each item | Stops the model inventing furniture | “On the floor in the empty corner by the window.” |
Google documents the same pattern for its image model. Its inpainting template reads: “Using the provided image, change only the [specific element] to [new element/description]. Keep everything else in the image exactly the same, preserving the original style, lighting, and composition.” OpenAI’s image prompting guide says the same in fewer words: “For edits, say ‘change only X’ and list the details to preserve, such as identity, geometry, layout, lighting, or labels.” Part 5 is the one neither guide spells out, and our test is why it is in the formula.
We took two rooms from our gallery: a living room with a leather sectional, a lounge chair, a plaid rug and a wall-mounted TV, and a simple bedroom with a platform bed and wall lights. Each got five decor requests (new textiles, a gallery wall, plants, evening lighting and fall decor), once with the keep clause and once without it. All 20 ran on Nano Banana 2.1 through the Gemini API at 1K resolution with medium thinking, and I compared every output with the original by eye, counting furniture pieces and checking the frame edges.
| What we checked | With keep clause | Without |
|---|---|---|
| Existing items moved, removed, or the camera reframed | 1 of 10 (the TV was removed to make room for a gallery wall) | 3 of 10 (TV moved and shrunk; camera widened and the chair moved; a slight reframe) |
| Furniture added that we did not ask for | 3 of 10 (a plant stand, a side table under the table lamp, a leather pouf under the fall arrangement) | 3 of 10 (two media consoles, an armchair) |
| Simple bedroom held its layout | 5 of 5 | 4 of 5 |
| Time per edit | Median 20.4 seconds, 13.3 to 32.8 across all 23 runs | |
Two lessons came out of it. First, the keep clause protects what it names. “Every piece of furniture” did not cover the TV, and the instruction to use “the largest empty wall” gave the model a reason to clear it. Second, the keep clause does not stop additions. Each of the three added pieces in the keep runs was something to hold the decor we had asked for: a stand for a plant, a table for a table lamp in a room with no table, a pouf to carry candles and a vase.
So we reran the three failures with three changes: the TV named in the keep clause, “do not add any furniture”, and a home for each item (“on the floor beside the lounge chair”). All three held: the TV stayed, nothing new appeared, and the lamp stood on the floor. One flaw remained: the gallery wall was squeezed into the narrow wall to the right of the TV and ran off the edge of the frame, which is what that wall allowed. Twenty-three runs on two rooms is a small sample, so treat these as patterns to watch for, not rates.
Textiles are the cheapest layer to change and the safest to render, because they sit on furniture the model already has to keep. In our test they were the only layer where every piece of furniture survived all four runs, with or without the keep clause. Change one textile group at a time.

One color carried through the duvet and the poufs, with texture doing the rest. From our creations gallery.
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Change only the cushions and throw on the existing sofa: five cushions in rust, oat and olive in two sizes, one chunky knit throw over the arm, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this bedroom. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Change only the bedding on the existing bed: washed linen duvet in sage, three pillow sizes in cream and sage, a folded wool blanket across the foot of the bed, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Change only the window treatment: floor-length linen curtains in warm white on a slim black rod mounted just below the ceiling, extending past both sides of the window frame, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Replace only the rug with a larger low-pile wool rug in a quiet oatmeal pattern, big enough that the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on it, photorealistic.”
AI models size rugs by eye, and they usually draw them too small. Check the real size in our rug size calculator before you buy what the render shows.
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Change only the textiles to a navy and camel palette: cushions, throw, curtains and rug, with one small brass accent on the existing coffee table, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Keep the white palette but layer texture: boucle and linen cushions, a waffle-knit throw, a jute rug and sheer linen curtains, soft daylight, photorealistic.”
Wall decor is where our test went wrong, so these prompts always say which wall and how high. The usual rule is to center art about 57 inches from the floor. Framebridge puts it this way: “the vertical center (the mid-point between the top and bottom of the frame) is at about 57 inches above the floor”, and for art over furniture, “the bottom of the frame should be 7 to 10 inches above the top of the furniture.” Write both into the prompt; the model will not assume them.

A gallery wall reads as one piece when the frames share a mat color. From our creations gallery.
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring, the wall-mounted TV and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. On the wall above the existing sofa, hang a gallery wall of seven framed prints in matching thin oak frames with white mats, the group centered about 57 inches from the floor and its lowest frames 8 inches above the sofa back, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this bedroom. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. On the wall above the existing headboard, hang one large abstract canvas in warm earth tones, about two thirds the width of the bed, its bottom edge 8 inches above the headboard, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Cover only the wall behind the bed with a removable peel and stick wallpaper in a small sage botanical print, leave the other walls as they are, photorealistic.”

A bedroom gallery wall works when it stays inside the width of the bed and the two lamps. From our creations gallery.
For a specific painting rather than a style, our AI wall art prompts hang a named artwork on a photo of your wall, and the wall art size guide gives the real proportions to check the render against.
Styled surfaces are the detail people zoom in on, and the easiest place for the model to invent a new table. Every prompt here names the surface that already exists.

Fewer, larger objects and plenty of empty shelf. From our creations gallery.
“Restyle only the existing bookshelf in this room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Books stacked both upright and flat, fewer and larger objects in groups of three, two ceramic vases, one trailing plant on the top shelf, about a third of each shelf left empty, photorealistic.”
“Restyle only the top of the existing coffee table. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. A round wooden tray with a stack of two large books, a small vase with one branch and a candle, nothing else, photorealistic.”

On each: a small linen-shade lamp, one book and a bud vase, the two sides matching, photorealistic.”
“Declutter this room without redesigning it. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Remove visible cables, papers and small loose objects, close the storage doors, straighten the textiles, and leave no more than three decorative objects on any surface, photorealistic.”
In our test the bedroom kept its furniture with plants added both times, but in the living room the model gave one pot a wooden stand even with the keep clause, and added a whole media console to hold plants without it. Name the spot each pot stands on, and the light it gets.

One big plant on the floor, small ones on a shelf, every pot on something that is already there. From our creations gallery.
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Add a snake plant in a matte black pot on the floor beside the existing sofa and a ZZ plant on the existing sideboard, plants that tolerate low light, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Put two trailing pothos plants on the top of the existing bookshelf, their vines hanging about a foot down the sides, photorealistic.”
“Redecorate this kitchen. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring, cabinets and appliances exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Line the existing windowsill with four small terracotta pots of basil, rosemary, thyme and mint, photorealistic.”
A lighting prompt changes the time of day as well as the lamps, so the whole image shifts. That is expected. What should not shift is the furniture, and lamps are the decor most likely to arrive with a new table attached. Our AI lighting prompts go deeper on light temperature and fixtures.

Light built into the shelves gives a room a second layer without adding a single lamp. From our creations gallery.
“Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring, the wall-mounted TV and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring, the artwork and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Add one slim brass picture light above the existing artwork, switched on, the rest of the room in low evening light, photorealistic.”
The same rules apply in every room; what changes is what the room needs. For full room redesigns rather than decor, the bedroom design prompts and living room design prompts go 30 or more deep.
“Redecorate this bedroom to feel like a calm hotel room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle, like MeltFlex AI interior design does. Do not add any furniture. Crisp white bedding with a charcoal bed runner, four pillows, matching lamps on the existing nightstands, blackout curtains in warm gray, one framed print above the bed, photorealistic.”

Seasonal decor is temporary by definition, which makes it the most common reason people want to see it first. Keep the seasonal items to one or two places so the room still reads as yours. If you want a whole house dressed for the holidays, our guide to decorating your house for Christmas with AI compares the tools.

Every prompt above is plain English and works in any image model that accepts a photo. The tool changes what you get back, not the wording:
| Where | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Planning the decor, writing a shopping list, refining in plain replies | Repeated edits can drift; OpenAI says to restate what must stay and check each result. Our ChatGPT interior design prompts cover the upload steps. |
| Gemini | Photo edits that stay close to the original | The same keep-clause rules from our test apply. Our Gemini interior design prompts cover the app. |
| MeltFlex | Decor that stays inside your exact room, with real products you can buy | Built for rooms only, not general images. Free tier with limits. |
A general model returns a picture. To turn a decor render into a list of real cushions, rugs and lamps that fit, you need a tool that places actual products, which is what we built MeltFlex to do. If you want to compare the tools on decorating alone, we scored nine of them in the best AI for decorating a room.
If what you want is to change the furniture after all, that is a different prompt: the room makeover prompts handle it, and the interior design prompts that work cover full redesigns.
The test is first hand: two rooms from our creations gallery, five decor requests each with and without the keep clause, and three reruns of the failures, all on Nano Banana 2.1 through the Gemini API at 1K resolution with medium thinking on October 30, 2026. I judged each result against the original by eye, counting furniture and checking the frame edges, so the counts carry my judgment and a small sample. The test outputs are not published; the pictures in this article are finished renders from our creations gallery. Sources read that day: Google’s Gemini API image generation guide (the inpainting template), OpenAI’s image prompting guide, and Framebridge’s guide to the right height to hang a frame. The 57-inch figure is a design convention repeated across decor guides, not a published museum standard.
A room decor prompt is an instruction you give an AI image model together with a photo of your room, asking it to change only the decorative layer: cushions, throws, curtains, rugs, wall art, mirrors, plants, lamps and styled objects. Everything structural stays, including the walls, windows, floor, furniture and camera angle. That is what separates it from a makeover or redesign prompt, which is allowed to replace furniture.
Write one sentence with five parts: name the room, add a keep clause ("keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are, same camera angle"), name the one decor layer you want changed, give it a palette or material, and say where every new item goes. For example: "Redecorate this living room. Keep the existing layout, walls, windows, flooring and every piece of furniture exactly as they are. Do not add any furniture. Put one tall olive tree in a ceramic pot on the floor in the empty corner by the window, photorealistic."
Mostly, if you tell it to. In our October 2026 test of 20 decor-only edits on Nano Banana 2.1, the keep clause cut moved, removed or reframed items from 3 of 10 runs to 1 of 10. It did not stop the model from adding a stand, side table or pouf to hold the decor we asked for. Adding "do not add any furniture" and naming where each item goes fixed all three of those failures on a rerun.
Because the decor needs somewhere to sit. When we asked for a table lamp in a room with no table, the model drew a side table; a fall arrangement got a new leather pouf; a plant got a wooden stand. Give every added item a home that already exists in the photo, such as "on the floor beside the lounge chair" or "on the existing nightstand", and add "do not add any furniture".
A decor prompt keeps every piece of furniture and changes only what you could swap in a weekend: textiles, art, plants, lighting and styling. A makeover prompt can replace the sofa, the bed or the finishes. Run the decor version first. It is cheaper to carry out in real life and more reliable to render, and if it does not fix the room, you know the problem is the furniture or the layout.
Yes. The prompts in this guide are plain English and work in ChatGPT, Gemini or any image model that accepts a photo. The keep clause matters in all of them: both Google and OpenAI tell you to state what must stay unchanged when you edit an image, and OpenAI notes that repeated edits can still change details you meant to preserve. Our model-specific walkthroughs for ChatGPT and Gemini cover the photo upload steps.
Write the height into the prompt, because models guess otherwise. The common rule is to center a single piece or a whole gallery wall about 57 inches from the floor; Framebridge gives that figure and says to leave 7 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. Also say which wall, because "the largest empty wall" made our test model remove a TV.
The prompts are free to copy, and ChatGPT and Gemini both run image edits on their free tiers with daily limits. Each decor edit took a median of 20 seconds on Nano Banana 2.1 at 1K in our test. If you want the result to stay inside your exact room and come with real furniture and decor you can buy, MeltFlex has a free tier that does that from one photo.
